San Juan Lower River through stunning private waters
Lower river floats cover 14 river miles of private waters full of trout and stunning scenery. Minimal crowds and eager trout make this a must fish on any trip to the Southwest and the San Juan Quality Waters.

This section is perfect for the dry fly enthusiast. Most fish down stream of the public waters are wild and untouched. Angling pressure is low due to limited access on this mostly private fishery. The absence of people and a good number of browns to a dry fly make this a wonderful float. There are also some big bows that call this section home. Lower river San Juan floats offer the angler the chance to fish larger fly patterns including hoppers, caddis and PMDs. Streamer fishing can also be very productive and exciting.

The Season
The lower river section is a little more limited than the upper river due to access, flows and the fishing conditions. There is a spring window from late February and will last till spring runoff some time in mid May. Then the prime season begins in Early June and will last well into the fall.

The Trout
The lower section fishes more like a free-stone fishery than a tail-water, but having the cold water flowing out from the bottom of the dam sure helps set the lower river as a great fishery. Mostly brown trout make up the resident fish in the lower section, however there are some nice rainbows as well. Average fish are in the 10 to 14 inch size range with plenty of chances at 15 to 18-inchers. There are some serious fish in this section too. Last season a guest hooked a fish we never landed, but did get a couple looks at the beast. The brown was in the 25 inch plus category and would have weighed well over 10 pounds.

Catch rates
An angler, on a good day an expect a good number of hook-ups per day. On nymph rigs 30+ fish per rod is not uncommon. Numbers for fish to a dry fly or streamer will be a little lower. Basically, there are a lot of trout in this section. Shhhhhhh
