The
mountain creeks
of the high country and mountains of the San Juan National
Forest, BLM and Wilderness Areas bring many
of us back to our first fly fishing adventures, either
as a kid or as an adult. The refreshing smell of pine
and the bright sparkling-clear water of bubbling brooks
will help you forget all about the office. Most fish
encountered on a creek will be small, but there will
be many to the dry fly throughout the day.
For
those that know these wild fish, you already have an
appreciation
of how each little brook trout and rainbow are spectacular
natural works of art. The terrain and scenery are
unmatched and there is no such thing as crowds. |

Mountain creeks are perfect! Most mountain streams have moderate to low
flows running through them. This is a great time to be on a high country
streams;
no crowds and eager trout. Bring the bug spray though, the black flies
can be a pest.
Effective
dries and
nymphs for creek trout:
Dries-Yellow,
orange and black stimi, Adams, para-caddis, elk
hair caddis, yellow and orange humpy, black fly,
Hendrickson. Basically anything that floats and
looks buggy will catch fish, hell even lint will
work.
Nymphs-Bead
head (BH) zug bug, BH Hare's ear, BH pheasant tail,
rubber leg stones, small buggers, prince nymph, BH
caddis pupa, BH AP black, brassie. |
