Summer
fly fishing
is
here and the San Juan and Root Pond continue to fish very well.
Root Pond's damsel hatch is in full swing making for some fantastic
dry fly fishing. Upper Juan, Animas and Rio are just about in shape
with salmon flies hatching.
Increased flows on the San Juan
below Navajo Dam in New Mexico has helped to make the spring
float fishing fantastic. Click here for flow
schedule info. Remember, the Juan is still a great fishery
during high water with steady fishing and little to no crowds.

Float
season is here!
Area
streams and rivers are dropping quickly from this winters heavy
snows. Once the flows are stable and clear our
great hatches of caddis, salmon flies, drakes and
PMDs
will start. We are just a couple days away from the start of this
magical season on the upper Juan, Animas and Rio Grande. Grab the
rod, book a flight and get
here
as soon as possible. This year is going to be fantastic due to healthy
trout and consistent flows.

Spring...or
still Winter???
What
a crazy few weeks here in the Southwest! So much for April showers
bringing May flowers. This April felt more like February and so far
May has arrived with a bit of a chill as well. June has been perfect
with light wind and warm temps. We've seen it all from gale force
winds on the lower Juan with the Perry/Lackey crew and freezing rain
on Root Pond with
Chris Winn. Thanks to all you guys for braving the elements with
us! Fortunately, the fish were not to be deterred and at least the
wrists and arms stayed warm from wrestling feisty trout. We'd also
like to thank our new buddies from Denmark who got a taste of some
Root Pond trout on the fly thanks to our old friend Bob Herchard
and Jim Cross. The
weather
has finally warmed enough to melt most of our deep snow pack
filling area lakes and reservoirs.
The warm
temps
have
made
for fantastic fishing conditions and have dialed in our summer
float season.
The
fish in Root pond are not getting any smaller and the calm
days have provided some fantastic takes on the dry. A bit further
south,
the increased flows on the San Juan below Navajo have sent
the crowds
packing and
left the fish with plenty of room to spread out. With little pressure
and clearing water the fish are gorging on all the new snacks being
pushed into the river. Wade fishing
can
be tricky
for those under 8 feet tall but the drift boats are perfect for
exploring back channels and searching out those picky trout
in the mazes of
willows.
If
you have friends that you think might enjoy these updates, please
drop us their email and we'll get them on the list. As always,
we will guard our email list with our life and will not share
it with anyone. Hopefully these
monthly snippets won't be too much of a distraction, but should
you
find that
we're clogging your in-box with unwanted fishing blogs,
drop us a line at will@gottrout.com and
we'll take you off the list.
Cheers,
Chris, Will, Josh, Rick, Ralph, Tim and
