bonefish, tarpon and permit at Scasa blanca lodge

getting there
After flying into Cancun you will be greeted by a lodge representative who will escort you to the charted flight that will carry you and your gear to the lodge's private air strip. The flight is a quick 45 to 50 minutes with exceptional views of the jungle and blue-green waters of the tropics. Once on the ground there is a quick boat ride to the lodges. Once you pull up to the pier a drink will be waiting for you and you gear will be placed in your room shortly after you arrive. On the day of arrival there is no guided fishing, however the fishing right around the lodges is fantastic. map

the accommodations
The carefree tropical breezes that pass through the lodge will help dissolve away all the stress of the busy world you left behind. Each lodge has a relaxed and simple pace, you are on island time now. Your room is right on the beach with salty sea breezes passing through freely to help you keep cool. Each room is spacious with large beds, chairs for relaxing as well as hot water and electricity. Water and ice are purified on the Island using a reverse osmosis process and each room has a cooler that is stocked daily with fresh ice and water. The tap water comes from a well and is not recommended for drinking.

after a long day

on the flats, reward yourself with a cool drink from the bar and enjoy some fresh ceviche or nachos under the palapa. After a shower make your way to the dinning room to enjoy the chef’s daily specialty. The menu varies from chicken, fresh fish, conch, lobster and of course steak. Accommodations can be made for those with special dietary needs.

the guides
Most of the guides for Casa and Playa Blanca are locals from the Yucatan region with years of experience on these waters. They are friendly and hard working. Push polling a 16 foot skiff all day is a true art. They are savvy on fish behavior as well as the best ways to get you into casting position. Most of the guides speak english fairly well and communication is rarely a problem. Knowledge of spanish is not necessary although even a few words here and there can help. A fishing coordinator is always on hand to make sure you're paired with the best guide for you.

the fishing is great...
but you need to check out the other activities. Both Ascension Bay and Espiritu Santo Bay, as well as Palancar Reef that parallels both lodges are teaming with an uncountable number of fish species. Palancar Reef is second only to Australia's great Barrier Reef in size. As you can imagine, the snorkeling is fantastic. Bird watching will leave you dizzy trying to identify over 325 species of birds including the rare six foot tall Jabiru. Lizards, sea turtles, and manatees also call the region home.

Sea kayak, bike, hike and if you can get a surfboard to the lodge, enjoy the nice break just down the beach from Casa Blanca. One of the most magical aspects of the region is the rich Mayan history. The reserve contains 22 registered archaeological sites. Two are just down the beach from the lodges. Both sites have late Mayan temples built between 600 to 900 A.D. One ruin, Tupak, is accessed by paddling a sea kayak through the mangroves and lagoons which surround it.
